Partners for local farms

We’re proud of our role supporting local farmers

Caithness has a rich history of producing some of the best pedigree and commercial stock in Scotland, and we’re proud to have played our part in that story through decades of caring for cattle and sheep in the county.

Local farmers take a lot of pride in their animals, and health and welfare is a top priority, which is why we take an active role in herd and flock health planning.

We support our clients in their showing pursuits, which is a very popular hobby in Caithness and something we’re always excited to get involved with the county shows.

You can also keep an eye out for our regular farmer’s meetings, which double up as free CPD and a great chance to have a blether with colleagues and neighbours.

Experienced Mixed Veterinary Surgeon Opportunity (Wick)

Our independent and employee-owned practice is looking for an experienced mixed vet to join our team.
We’re idyllically located on the north east coast of the Highlands and offer a genuine mixed service, working for the people of our community to provide the very best care we can to pets, horses and farms.

Although the role can be flexible and individual interests pursued, a vet with an enthusiasm for farm animal work would be particularly suitable. We are a friendly and supportive team, share OOH (currently 1:5 with days off in lieu) and offer a competitive salary package.

For details of what we can offer you please visit our careers page: dsmcg.co.uk/careers/veterinary-surgeon-wick/

For an informal chat about the role or to talk about next steps, please contact Pete, either via phone on 01955 602088 or via email at jobs@dsmcg.co.uk.

How lovely

January is nearly out of the way, which means our latest farmer’s meeting is coming up fast.

We invite our local farmers to an evening of friendly chat and farming insights on Thursday February 6th in the Park Hotel (Thurso), with the focus this month on calf health.

We see this as a perfect opportunity for a catch up with local farmers on a dark winter night – and there’ll be plenty of tea and coffee to keep us going!

This will be followed by talks from Boehringer and one of our vets.

It’s totally free and we’d love to see you there. RSVP now via dsmcg-calf-health-farmers-update.eventbrite.co.uk/ or email us at thurso@dsmcg.co.uk.

After lots of hard work, we’re really excited to share our brand new website with you.

Not only does it look great, inspired by our beautiful countryside and coastlines, but it makes it so much easier for you to engage with us as a practice.

Whether you want to check the date for our next farmer's event, send us a message, find out more about our services or sign up to our Equine Highland Health Plan, our website is now the place to go.

We’d love to hear what you think, and if there’s anything else we could introduce to our website to make us easier to reach, please do let us know.

We hope you enjoy our new look!

Last chance to take advantage of our free vaccine offer 🐎

Equine flu is a dangerous illness that passes easily between horses – but that can be prevented if you get your horse vaccinated.

That’s why we’re offering a free second vaccine if you get your first dose in January, whether it’s your horse’s first time being vaccinated or you’re restarting their immunity after missing their booster.

The flu virus can be spread by horses travelling to and from the yard – even if they’re vaccinated – as well as through the air and on clothes, yard equipment, troughs and bowls.

Unless your horse is vaccinated, it can be hard to protect them from becoming unwell. With our offer of a free second vaccine, there’s no reason to delay.

Pre-booking is essential and call charges will apply if we come to your yard – you have the option of bringing your horse to either of our practices in Wick and Thurso.

To secure your free second vaccine, book your first appointment by calling your local team at our Thurso or Wick branches – that’s 01847 892 387 for Thurso or 01955 602 088 for Wick.
