Welcome to Thurso
Donald McGregor moved to Caithness to take over the running of the Thurso practice from Mr Jim Simison when he passed away in 1965 and we’ve been caring for local animals ever since.
Originally in Princes Street, the surgery moved to its current location of Janet Street in 1995, where existing offices were extended to form purpose built veterinary premises to suit the requirements of the practice.
This included the conversion of an existing shed into our large animal wing, with an operating room, a drug store and calf pens to provide large animal hospitalisation facilities.
The small animal wing of the practice was extended in 2023 to provide us with more room to consult and operate due to the increasing demands for small animal services.
From here we’re ideally placed to provide veterinary services to the north and west of Caithness as well as north Sutherland, and we have a dedicated team of vets, nurses and receptionists to provide services to both small and large animal clients.
We work closely with our colleagues in Wick to provide the best service for our clients, with records available for access from both branches.
We’re proud to offer a family friendly service, with 15 minute consults for our small animal clients, dedicated large and small animal car parks, disabled access and a large stock of both large and small animal medicines available on site.

Putting the care
of your pet first
Proudly independent and locally managed, we’re free to take decisions in the best interests of our patients.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce our new Highland Health Plan, which includes free vet and nurse consults for your beloved cats and dogs – just £24 a month for Unlimited members!
There’s also our Standard Highland Health Plan, which at £18 per month ensures annual routine preventative care as well as a range of further perks and offers.

Out and about in Thurso
We’re proud to be based in the beautiful Highlands and passionate about the Thurso community.
We work closely with local charities including providing care for the animals of KWK9 and Cats Protection, as well as fundraising for MacMillan Cancer support and providing our team with training from Alzheimers Scotland.
The next generation of vets and nurses is important to us, and we regularly take part in career events at Thurso High School and local primary schools, as well as working closely with students completing their nursing qualifications at North Highland College.
You’ll often see us getting stuck in at local agricultural shows such as Latheron, the Caithness Show and the Halkirk Highland Games, so give us a wave if you’re there this year!
If not you might spot team members walking our dogs around the Riverside “mall walk”, just a stone’s throw from our surgery on Janet Street.

Experienced Mixed Veterinary Surgeon Opportunity (Wick)
Our independent and employee-owned practice is looking for an experienced mixed vet to join our team.
We’re idyllically located on the north east coast of the Highlands and offer a genuine mixed service, working for the people of our community to provide the very best care we can to pets, horses and farms.
Although the role can be flexible and individual interests pursued, a vet with an enthusiasm for farm animal work would be particularly suitable. We are a friendly and supportive team, share OOH (currently 1:5 with days off in lieu) and offer a competitive salary package.
For details of what we can offer you please visit our careers page: dsmcg.co.uk/careers/veterinary-surgeon-wick/

January is nearly out of the way, which means our latest farmer’s meeting is coming up fast.
We invite our local farmers to an evening of friendly chat and farming insights on Thursday February 6th in the Park Hotel (Thurso), with the focus this month on calf health.
We see this as a perfect opportunity for a catch up with local farmers on a dark winter night – and there’ll be plenty of tea and coffee to keep us going!
This will be followed by talks from Boehringer and one of our vets.
It’s totally free and we’d love to see you there. RSVP now via dsmcg-calf-health-farmers-update.eventbrite.co.uk/ or email us at thurso@dsmcg.co.uk.

Whether you want to book an appointment, order repeat prescriptions, find out more about our services or sign up to our relaunched Highland Health Plan, our website is now the place to go.
We’d love to hear what you think, and if there’s anything else we could introduce to our website to make us easier to reach, please do let us know.
We hope you enjoy our new look!

Hi equine highland health plan on horse page and employee owned business on careers page links need attention. But looks great ⭐
