Surgery can be a worrying time for any pet owner, but knowing what to expect can help you feel more prepared.
Our team is here to support you every step of the way, ensuring your pet is well cared for before, during and after their procedure.
To ensure your pet’s procedure goes smoothly, there are a few important steps to follow before the day:
- Fasting: In most cases, your pet will need to avoid food for a specific period before their surgery. This is usually from midnight the night before, but we’ll confirm this with you based on your pet’s needs. Water is typically allowed, but we’ll advise if there are any restrictions.
- Medication: If your pet is on any regular medication, please let us know in advance. Some medications may need to be paused, while others can be continued as usual.
- Bathing and grooming: We don’t need your pet to be bathed, but it will help if they aren’t too muddy or sandy, especially if they’re due to have stitches or a wound. Clean fur helps reduce the risk of infection.
- Blood samples: We offer pre-anaesthesia blood sampling to help to minimise risks, especially for older pets or those with certain health conditions.
- Drop-off arrangements: On the day of surgery, plan to arrive at the practice at your scheduled time. Our team will take your pet’s history, confirm the procedure details, and address any final questions you may have.
During the procedure, our experienced team will monitor your pet closely to ensure their safety and comfort.
Once the surgery is complete, we’ll either contact you with an update or arrange beforehand a time for you to ring us. At this point we can let you know when your pet is ready to go home.
Post-operative care is an essential part of your pet’s recovery.
Here are some tips to help them heal safely and comfortably:
- Rest and quiet: Your pet will need a calm and quiet environment for the first few days. Restricting activity, such as running or jumping, can help avoid unnecessary strain on their incision.
- Monitoring: Check your pet’s wound daily for any redness, swelling or discharge. If you notice anything unusual or if your pet seems uncomfortable, contact us straight away.
- Feeding and drinking: Your pet may be a little drowsy or off their food on the first day home. Offer small, light meals and plenty of water. Normal appetite should return within 24-48 hours. If not, let us know.
- Medication: If medication has been prescribed, follow the instructions carefully and complete the full course, even if your pet seems back to normal.
- Exercise restrictions: Depending on the type of surgery, your pet may need to avoid exercise for a set period. We’ll advise you on this and provide a tailored recovery plan.
While most pets recover well after surgery, it’s important to watch for signs that may indicate a problem, such as:
- Loss of appetite beyond 48 hours
- Excessive swelling, redness or discharge from the wound
- Difficulty breathing, vomiting or persistent lethargy
- If you notice anything concerning, call us straight away for advice.
